So, this is not so much a thread to whore ourselves, since we can put a link in our profile, as a discussion. Is it dying? Love it? Hate it?

Opinions :D

Also, has anyone here made the mistake of using the flash layout editor? It now won't react to coding I put in, does anyone know a way to reverse it?

I think the Myspace fad is dying now, just like the Geocities fad before it died, and the Facebook fad will die after it.

I go on MySpace for music and friends, and I like the customisation, but it's not my greatest love - just a shameful addiction... the advantage is that if you ask someone you've just made friends with, the odds are that they are quite likely to be on MS.

Yes, can we shorten MySpace to something other than MS, we already have one evil corporation that uses them initials, another one would be overload.

As for the customisation, MySpace is nowhere near as customisable as Geocities, or the other personal website hosts, were; they've reduced the customisation to accommodate for the lack of skill of their users.

You're right. I tried to avoid that too, you're completely right about the "other MS"... maybe there should be a thread on operating systems? So poor lost souls don't forget that they need to use Mac or Linux. :p

But, to stay on topic, no, unless MyS works XD

Its a virtual pet on a site of the same name, basically just a load of games that you can play and get some fake money in reward in order to buy stuff for the fake pet like food and games and stuff, was a rather big fad for a while in my area but got taken over by runescape.

Just out of interest, do you think the youtube fad will die?

Console

I don't think youtube will ever die completely, partially because it's now owned by Google, but mainly because they're actually providing a useful service; free video storage. As bandwidth is getting larger and cheaper more and more people are going to be able easily stream videos and many companies can alleviate their own bandwidth costs by having their video media hosted offsite, and YouTube is a convenient way for them to do this.

I don't think YouTube will ever die, but I don't think it will have the popularity it has now in another year or two.

Oh good, I'm glad you feel this way as I do agree, youtube is useful, even to the bbc for video's they cant be bothered to put into their own video players etc.

I've never really used YouTube myself, I've never really wanted to watch random video diaries of American teenagers, but at least now there an actual legitimate use for Flash; one had to come along eventually.

Its also useful for music videos, small parts of tv programs, funny videos, snippits of comedy etc.

I would have said that you may not have seen a youtube video because of the whole no flash thing but you dont need to have flash to view them - just the latest real player which can download and play flv's :p

Console

I would actually consider anything created by Real to be lower than Flash. Luckily though, FLV's are now part of the open source FFMPEG library collection, so I can download and play them in any media player I like.

I think it depends on what you want to achieve,Myspace is basically just a social networking site whereas Geocities can be(or be) a proper website with social networking features aswell as other stuff

Myspace is less customisable these days because Myspace have blocked more customisation sites meaning some Myspace pages end up looking poo & you have to reset the pages & look for a customisation site Myspace hasnt blocked, grr!

Ok, two questions; one what's a MySpace customisation site? And two, how could they block any customisation when it's just HTML and CSS?

Example of customisation: -

http://myspace.com/trickstersworld

NB: That's a MySpace page I made ages ago as part of a challenge (it's was a data mining challenge, essentially a web-based treasure hunt).

A customisation site is where you go for fancy backgrounds, flash animations etc,Myspace block the image tags etc.

Say if I wanted to put a Tesco logo on a Myspace page the url would be:
http://direct.tesco.com/store/i/TD_logo_hori.gif

now Myspace may react by changing what youve entered into something like:
http://...../.../.._..._....gif

Ah ha, well ignoring the fact that I actually agree with MySpace stopping people from hot linking (one of many of my pet peeve's about MySpace users), why don't you just host the image yourself and link to it from there? I assume that they're only blocking images from certain sites, but if they're blocking all images then I can show you a very simple work-around, as there's an image on the MySpace page I linked to above with works fine.

I don't have any problems with customising my MySpace, I found a great site that hasn't been blocked and had loads of nice layouts, but I've completely forgotten the link, =/

I'll see if it's saved on my computer at home though.

Yea I know you could host the images on other sites although the problems with that is using up the bandwidth etc,the fact is Myspace shouldnt be blocking customisation things in the 1st place it spoils the whole point of what social networking/customising is about in my opinion.

I dont know about blocking for certain sites but it doesnt seem fair,I think Myspace have been banning videos from sites such as YouTube too but cant confirm this.

Console

Of course it's fair; instead of you bothering to host the images yourself, or on a dedicated image hoster, you've decided to simply hot link the images which consumes someone else bandwidth and resources. I personally think that it's been a long time coming, and would like to know how to add addresses to the list of those that are blocked.

Now, your argument is...?

I gave an example of the type of thing Myspace is doing, the images, videos etc on the customisation sites are actually hosted on the sites,so its not fair for myspace to block the images hosted on the customisation sites.

You actually said that you couldn't confirm if MySpace is blocking videos or not (I'm not sure why you can't confirm it), but as for the images, do you have a link to a profile where such a policy has 'ruined' the page (I won't be flippant and say that the page was ruined long before the policy was instated, I want to see exactly what MySpace is doing)?

I think my radio space still looks a bit poo(broken code etc),cant check at the mo though as I'm on a restrictive PC:

Cant give an example in regards to video blocking though.

Ok, I've done a bit of digging, and as far sa I can tell, you've screwed up somewhere. The following two MySpace profiles both use the same customisation site as you did, and have images hosted on the same host as yours, and yet there images aren't being blocked in any way: -

http://www.myspace.com/fittirock
http://www.myspace.com/runtpiggy

I've also looked further and unfortunately can find no blocking of hot-linked images what-so-ever other than your profile (although my search was hardly exhaustive).

I'm not on Myspace etc, I find it weird that with the Internet it's often not the first site to do something that gets the glory. Faceparty and others were around well before myspace. The same thing happened with Google where other (and frankly superior) search engines were around first.

As for Geocities I remember the good old days when it was practically unmonitored and there was all sorts of stuff on there. Yahoo and cheap web hosting/domains along side people becoming more Internet savvy (having your small business website on Geocities doesn't look too professional these days) lead to the downfall of that though.

With Youtube (which I'm a big fan of BTW) , unless someone comes out with something better (as facebook apparently is to myspace) I see it only getting bigger and bigger as bandwidth continues to increase. There aren't many but some sites like ebay and youtube will just continue to grow and grow IMO.
