View Full Version : Listening figures go down?
So what do you think of the listening figures which have been reported in the newspaper today? There is always a decline in listening figures at this time of the year as people are often more busy etc. On the plus side its not just Radio 1 that have suffered a decrease - Radio 2 have also lost listeners.
My prediction is that the show will recover and gain more listeners come next results.

It's a very busy time of year indeed! Start of anew year for many, Christmas, soo much of nothing on in my life...
I'm sure they'll rocket back up soon enough :) Especially with Scissor hands!

Yeah also with the floods we had this year it was bound to affect the figures somehow
I'm sure it will gain even more as the year passes
Im one of the lost listeners, but hi, its fine, youve found me again.
I havent listened since Chris returned, and i dont feel like ive missed much. Maybe it will pick up.
I'm not quite lost yet. I do still manage to hear the show fairly regularly in a live capacity and always listen again to a bit of it too, but I don't like the new start time.
Three hours seemed like a perfect length of time to me, where as with three and a half it just seems like there's too much of the show now. I don't know how many people actually hear the first half hour anyway. I wouldn't have thought there'd be all that many who'd be awake at 6:30 am every morning. I pity those who are!

I only really listen to the show when I'm doing my practical work, i.e glass designing etc. When I'm working on the phone (which I have been primarily doing recently cus we are uber busy) I can't listen to the radio for obvious reasons!

i always listen to it in the morning when i get ready then miss an hour when im on the bus to work but i have it on all day in surgery, much to he annoyance of the older patients who prefer lincs fm, stuff if im putting that on lol
Is Lincs fm your local gcap?
Or like BBC Radio Lancashire? I hate my local bbc station. And my gcap's crap, only decent show is one we all get, that scary Kevin bloke on weekday nights :|

I do still listen and I love the show, but I personaly think they have messed with the running order to much. They changed it between summer and autumn break, then changed it again when they came back after the last holiday. It just seems up in the air at the moment. They need to sort Dom's feature out, as it's crap as Who asked Dom. I thought Who knows Dom was better.
At the moment, i dont feel inclined to listen. Like Stewie says, the running order is up in the air. Change is bad at the best of times, but this amount of change is bound to not be good.
I really do hope it picks up. Too much has been changed at once, in my opinion.

I have only listerned from 6.30 a couple of times and it seem's to me that the team want to get the first half of the show out of the way and then when 7.00 comes it seem's to get to near normal. I agree with the other's, change is not a good thing sometime's. Was nice to hear 2 word tang today. Missing Carpark Catchphase loads.

It's as if the first half an hour is a warm-up section, kind of like the way they bring in a warm-up guy on tv shows before they start the filming, who nobody watching the programme from their house sees.
Nothing of much interest ever happens in those 30 minutes, which makes it feel like a bit of a waste of time and energy to me. When I'm reading the running order so I can select bits of the show to Listen Again to my brain never seems to register the 6.30-7 items, it's as if in my head the show still only starts properly at 7am.

I don't think change is usually a good thing at all. There are too many people in the world who want to go around 'fixing' what wasn't broken in the first place, Radio 1 management included. There was nothing wrong with the three hour show, so why did they feel the need to change it? I know the last set of listening figures, in which those for the breakfast show dropped, can't have been based on the new start time in any way because of the timescale they were drawn from.
But I wonder what will happen with the next set? If it was a sound decision to increase the timeslot for the show than you'd imagine the figures would go up because people would have more of a chance to listen to it with the extra time it's now on air for, but that may not be the case at all. Either way it'll be interesting to see what happens, whether it works out for the best or the worst.

well i think the 6:30 starts is great esp for me in my job it makes that more enjoyable to listen and i think its been very good
and if i was moyles i know what he would say if you don't like it switch off change the channel :P
But what if everyone turned off? Then it wouldn't just be the first half an hour that was pointless broadcasting.

The point im making if it suits alot of people then let it stay but for the ones that whine about then obv they not much of a fan are they
and as for the figures going down it was mentioned the reason why it it was not just chris show it was all radio figures but between chris and wogan it was 250000
id also like to make a bet that the extra half hour works really well lets see what the next figures bring and see then

How do they know how many people are listening anyway? these figures all seem a bit spurious to me and always have done.
I'd guess that they could be more accurate too. But since the figures for every show are taken from the same source then overall it must still be a level playing field when it comes to comparing one show's listener numbers against another's.

How can they possibly count the listeners? That's always interested me. After all, do they take into account "Listen Againers" or the Sirius users here in the U.S. that listen to all 17.5 hours every week? They must just guesstimate.....

They use statistical models to make a (very good mathematical) estimation, and I don't think it does include the Listen Again figures.
shame they dont inculde it im one of the lost ones as it is now my works policy not to let us have the radio/cd/ ipods with loud speakers or even the tv on apart from in the recption and even then its on low and some classic music staion i do like classical music but not evrey day
as some of are clinets have remarked on hearing are music from the other pats of the place on being to loud tho its only up loud so they dont hear some of the cats and dogs ylelp or bark.
i do use the listen agin feture when i get home or i jst wait for the podcast tho that meens i miss out on some of the show
Ahh so that's how they do it! :D

Well, if they don't include the listen again people like me (even though, in all actuality, I'm not listening "again") then Moyles has even more listeners. Right? Or is that estimated in the model as well, Console?
