Here we are then.
Lets put this system to the test. Lets see how actually giving out a little reputation affects the Top Users list.
Everyone reading this give a positive reputation point to the 5 users you think have given the best posts.
It'll be interesting to see what results come out.

I still find this rep thing a bit odd... i have given a fair bit of rep out but just think it's a bit odd because it forms an elite group on here and i feel left out. I feel like i am butting into conversations sometimes when all i really want is to be part of the group and join in the discussions.

EDIT: Not so much now. I got bad rep for something that wasn't even in my post, or even to do with me. I believe it was a case of clicking the wrong post, but it was still bad rep. *grumbles* And receiving "I hope you die" at the end wasn't too nice.

Although your spelling is quite bad, on some posts (like what I have just quoted) its actually quite good and very legible. It most definately would not deserve any bad rep. Maybe you should stick to whatever formula you used for the above post, taking your time, running it quickly through a spell checker in word or whatever.
Its clear that you can make posts with less mistakes when you really think about it.
This post is meant to be constructive and helpful, please dont take offence :)

for the above post i did what i always do but it also depneds on my mood as well whatever way my brain works if im upset or slightly angry my spelling seems to be better but if im hpyer it can be relly bad tho saying that it wroks in reverse as well makes no sence i know jst depends on if im haveing a good day or a bad day cheers guys i always fell so stupid when i make tons of mistakes and im always blind to them even when i re raed things and with alis post ther i can read that and to me looks like he spelt it corecley it was only when i ran it thogh spell check that i saw he didnt but me useing spell check i still cant always find the right spelling <>

It's bloody mean to give bad rep for spelling. How do we know a person isn't dyslexic? I'm a huge fusspot when it comes to grammar and spelling, but I would never give someone bad rep for it.
If this was my site I'd make sure rep could be tracked and that people who made mean rep comments without any justification were banned.
If you can't be nice, piss off to youtube and have a fight there instead, I am! lol

Ali love, are you dyslexic? Because if you are then I don't see why we can't all just embrace your unique way of spelling. If it's because you rush your typing, then you need to slow down pet.
I can indeed see many errors in the comment you've linked to and I can do a teacher's corrected version for you to compare if you really want. But really, who gives a toss?!
I think maybe the person who wrote 'cos of speilln' may have been trying to be ironic. Or perhaps they're just a twat!

What the chickens? No, i'm not dyslexic thank you. I'm perfectly fine mental, just a bit sick mind. I can't see any errors in my posts, maybe a few grammatical but it still gets my point across. I have no problem with spelling. I get they're, their, there mixed up sometimes, but not often. I feel like I'm being ****ing attacked. Excuse my french! Jeez.
No one has ever had a problem before, not to this extreme have they?
I've been on this site for a year and never felt so pissed off at it, ever.

And your last post had no errors at all, so I reckon the Enrique one was just written a bit quick and people should give you a break. ;)
I agree on the not giving bad rep for spelling - in any case - it should be for not liking the quality of a post, in fact I think that it should only be good rep - so that people don't give bad rep just if they disagree with someones views. I've received some negative rep and I don't understand why - rather childish in my opinion but ah well.
i agree but now u know how i fell now ali for getting bad rep for spelling and that was with me trying not to make mistakes still got bad rep for it so who ever it is will be in for a shock when i stop trying to spell:finger1: that way no one will be able to read my posts but me and like i said i have a extremly bad cause of dislexea and dispexa along with some other mental problems witch is why im spelling is so bad even when i try not to make mistakes and when i do i can never see them until some one points them out or i copy paste and do a spell check even that doesnt alwyas help me:eusa_naughty: and the whole bad rep for spelling makes me mad but also upsets me for a lot of reasons

I don't believe it's right to give someone bad rep for their spelling. The content of what that person's saying is what I regard reputation's about, not how it's said!
Speaking of reputation, how is it that only a couple of days ago I gave Kate one bit of reputation to get her out of her negative place and now she's half way up the table. Coincidentally Q is now at the top! Hmmm.
I like the phrase 'to get me out of a negative place'. Thanks for that Aled, but I honestly don't mind where I am on the list. It's not as though we get anything extra for being higher up the table, so it's irrelevant where anyone is really.
i dont mind were i am on the list tho a fe days ago i was near the top then got about 4 or more bad rep for spelling whlist i was also giveing good rep to posts i likeed and liek i said in my other post its evil to give bad rep for spelling i would so love to find out who it was that done it but that cant be done
got a question tho when veiwing ur rep is there a way to see all the rep u have been given? or just the most recent rep gave to u?

'Rep' is tracked, and it's easy to see what 'rep' is given and taken, and their respective comments. Which reminds me, to those of you who don't add comments as to why you're giving or taking 'rep', please do add a comment, it'll make it far easier to moderate the system.

Ok I'm trying to be careful about how I put this because I think generally it's really not important about where you are on a forum league table, I think if you are a decent person/poster the regulars will know that which is what counts with a small web community like this.
It seems to me though that since this post the rep system seems to be being taken a little too seriously. Now I'm by no means the greatest poster ever, I like to think I contribute however and for whatever reason some people had been nice enough to rep me which had me quite high up the table, however since Aled encouraged use of the system I checked out my profile to see that in that time I'd been given 3 negative reps.

Ok so the wise up one could be something to do with me joking about setting Pringles on fire, that's fine it's fairly immature. However giving me negative rep because you don't like Jeremy Clarkson? that's a bit of a weird one.
Then the final one (which is the main one I'd take issue with) is a negative for the Cloverfield (1-18-08) thread, where all I've done is discussed the film and given links to any new info I've found and I'm rated negatively for "well you know how it is" ? It seems to me that some people may just be giving negative reps for the hell of it or just to drive other peoples scores down.
Now as I say it's really not that important where you rank on some forum table, but it does look like the system is being abused slightly already. For that reason I wonder if maybe it would work better to remove the "league table" as it were and instead have something like a "poster of the week" who is the person that gets the most positive reps in any given week. I think when people can't see where they are in the list it might take away the incentive to dish out negative reps to try to drive other people down, and instead make people focus on just making good posts week in week out. Also a weekly or monthly system would give new forum posters a better chance to be top of the list after a while when the rest of us have been gathering reps for a longer period of time.
Anyway no big deal, just some ideas.

Now so far I think this is the only negative I've given out and having since learned of your dyslexia I now regret giving it. However to clarify, I'm not one of these people that sit on forums looking for bad use of the language, I gave that rep after having problems reading several of your posts which were very bad spelling wise to the point it took me at least a couple of reads to make sense of them. As someone else mentioned some of your other posts are much better so I had assumed this was down to carelessness on your part, as that is apparently not the case I apologise and would also say you shouldn't feel like you don't belong here, I certainly don't have the right to say that to anyone here and don't feel that way anyway.
However I would ask that in order to make things a little easier for us to read if you could either run your posts through word before posting them, or do what I do and run firefox from www.getfirefox.com and install the English dictionary plugin which underlines any spelling errors while typing new posts or emails in the browser. As I say though don't feel bad, that was never my intention.

Two of those 'reps' are from the same person; a person who, out of 18 'reps' given, has only given three positive ones. We may need to take some form of moderation with the rep system to stop abuse.
I'm going to hold my hands up here and say that I believe the person Console is referring is me. I'm not sure if I've ever given reputation 'seriously'. I generally do it on a random basis, except with absolutely awful spelling because that really does wind me up, regardless of the quality of the content of the post. I hardly ever gave any rep, good or bad, when the system began.
Then after Aled plugged the whole thing recently I started to do it more often, and being honest it was just for the fun of seeing people move up and down the table. It was surprisingly easy to manipulate, it worked faster than I expected. Feel free to take my rep 'privileges' away Console, I've had my fun now and I achieved my main aim a few days ago.
One thing I did think was interesting was that the more bad rep I gave out the more good rep I was given and the higher up I went, thus slightly disproving both the saying 'what goes around comes around' and the theory of 'good karma'.
If you want good things to happen to you then start doing bad things to others may be the message I give to my kids for this Christmas. Oh and sorry if anyone was actually peed off at my negative repping messages, but I really don't think the system warrants being taken all that seriously. If that's the kind of thing you lie awake worrying about then you obviously lead a very stress free life.

I'm far from p'd off and agree up to a point (it's only the internet after all), however if the people abuse or manipulate the system routinely then it becomes worthless, this is why I feel a poster of the week/month may work better than a league table system as a way of encouraging good posts.
Yeah, I do like that idea. I think it'd be a more accurate way to give someone a plaudit.
the wise up rep was from me but i did make a maistake when giveing it it was ment be be in the good rep part but with me saying lol but wise up in a jokely way

well its been up and down so far i was fouth on the list for like a day but so far the number one spot has been between gbm q and terrier
i do like the rep system the only bad thing is the way u can freely give bad rep for stupid resons like spelling i have a few rep things staying stuff about spelling but well who cares u cant controll how people give rep and for what resons the one thing i would say is that people keep a note of the rep they have given out and recived i did ask console if theres a way of doing that and if i rember corcely from yestaday i think he said he would wrok on it but i do have sort tream merory at times but its all good now

You may know by now that I think it's mean to give bad rep for rubbish spelling.
How do you know someone's not got a real problem and is constantly being told they don't meet requirements?!
Maybe this is the only place they feel they can come to be among friends.
I utterly detest bad spelling and/or grammar, but I bite my tongue and remain calm, for the sake of other people's feelings.
All you have to do is politely point out the 'check spelling' tick at the top of the message pane for gods sakes!

I really feel this 'rep thing' is a little bit like bullying. Bad spelling, bad posts, bad this and bad that.
I am sure this will make some people not want to post at all as they may feel that because they are bad speller's or have dyslexia ( spell checker would not work for people with dyslexia as they do not know how the word is spelt anyway ) and may feel they get bad rep's because of this.
Why can we not just post what we want to express. Not everyone like's the same thing's, it would be a very boring world if we did.
I do not care if I am bad rep'ed or not, I post cos I want to join in the conversation and nothing else.

i totally agree with that comment some people have to remember that not everyone has the same level of education as others plus don't really care about spelling and punctuation as much as others and just like to join in with the conversations

I'm afraid I'm going to ignore your festive sentiments postie, nice though they are, and say that 'caring' about spelling, punctuation, and grammar doesn't come into it as far as I'm concerned. The reason that dictionaries exist, and why there are rules governing the use of punctuation and grammar is to ensure that everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to reading and writing.
If these rules are followed then reading and comprehending what someone has written is a very simple and quick task.The more frequently the rules are broken, the more difficult (and irritating) that task becomes for the reader and the longer it takes.
I take on board your comment about different people having varying levels of eduction. However I think it's safe to assume that everyone who posts here has at least attended/is still attending school. If a primary school is even halfway decent, then by the time a child leaves they should be able to spell fairly competently and both understand and use the basic conventions of grammar and punctuation correctly. This is simple stuff, it's not as if we're asking anyone to join in discussions about quantum physics. This is a good thing, because I've seen the books my brother has to study on that subject as part of his degree and it looks very difficult.

I agree with you on some of your comment's, but we all have off day's with punctuation etc: I take it that you work with primary school children !
I think that the standard of education in comprehensive school's is on the decline as you only have to listen to group's of teenagers ( not all ) to hear the way they talk and the foul language that emit's from their mouth's, this is even the case with very young children in some area's.
I alway's use to mix with well educated people but the last few year's I have worked with less educated people, who could hardly spell there name's, if that. It did open my eye's to the fact that a lot of people are less fortunate than other's, but in their defence it's most likley to do with the parent's, who have had bad education, bad schooling and have learning difficulties.
We do not all have fantastic up-bringing and people should not be judged by this.
We are all the same, but just a little bit different. This should alway's be remembered.

The reason that dictionaries exist, and why there are rules governing the use of punctuation and grammar is to ensure that everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to reading and writing.
I completely agree with Kate on this. The reason that we have specific rules, not just in language, but in many aspects of life, is so everyone can (at least have the opportunity to) understand what is going on. No offence to bbb, but sometimes there are parts of his posts that I can't decipher, which is a shame because he could be making a good, interesting point; if I can't understand it though, it's useless.
This is simple stuff, it's not as if we're asking anyone to join in discussions about quantum physics. This is a good thing, because I've seen the books my brother has to study on that subject as part of his degree and it looks very difficult.
Trust me, it becomes far more difficult once you understand it.
well i do agree that lanage needs rules other wise it would not wrok but i disagree on the part about everyone should be able to spell and use gammer corectly like i said before when i was in pirmary scholl i had spellings to take home and learn for the next day when i got home i lreant them of by heart and even went over them agin before leaveing for school and i did get them all right but then when it came to the test
thats were i got them all wrong thats part of haveing dislexea and disprexa both are simalr but disprexea afeects the mermry as well and other things.
in high school all my gardes were a+ even in my g.s.c.e exmas but the reson for that was i had a sribe someone to write down my ansewears for me as my writeing is not the best nor my spelling as my class wrok would have shown that i could hold a convo vreable no problem all but saying one or two words wrong saying that i could teach you a lot of stuff that you would not understand for exsample the lies of zoonosies < ive spelt it wrong as i dont have my book to get the spelling i could teach u alot about animals and jujustsu and i can fully explain dislexea and disprexea verblay i dont find any of that hard and i dont find injecting cats and dogs and other animals with the right dose of medacation the only thing i find turly hard is the spelling and at times gammer.
i do try and spell things corecly as much as i can and if your relly fusey about spelling then instad of giveing bad rep for it point it out to me in a nice way instaed of a condesending way one more thing before i go on the news a few weeks a ago the goveamnet openly admitted that people with dislexea and disprexea amoung with other s
were being neglected and that alot of techers are unawere at how to deal with this or even know what they were and how they affect people this was more so the case in older teachers as the report said but even now a lot of young teachers arent being tols about anything about the condions
the only help i ever got was in high school and that was for exmas only i never did get all my class wrok down but i always was able to memarise the lesons this resulted in me being top of my class and my year every year even know if u were to look and my books you would see half done wrok.
on to other ways dislexea and disperexa affect me and others is hand eye codanation same for foot eye this makes it hard to walk at times as im always triping up and meen that if u were to throw a ball at me i wont beable to catch it and theres a small chance that i will beable to move it out of the way useing afoot ball here as a exsample however now things to all the help that i had to pay for and my jujustsu im able to cach it 50%of the time and even witha tenies ball

Grammar and spelling afd the majority of the rules in any language; what language rules do you think we need to follow to be able to communicate (in written form) efficiently?
for any thing fromal such as a letter a would use gammer correcly
but for anything informal such as texts msg or msn i tend to use slang and that wroks for me as for the site your able to read most of my posts even know i dont use gammer such as full stops in it as i class it as in formal

Right lets get this straight The whole idea on the reputation thing is all about giving either good or bad reputation on the post meaning IE: if the post content warrants a good post where as you either agree or maybe intrigued or found it amusing
A bad post would be either something that could offend or be hurtful or nonsense or off topic
but i don't think the whole idea of introducing this systems was to bully people about spelling grammar and punctuation these are just pet peeves
To me the whole idea of forums is a social network in discussing things that we might find amusing or general chit chat about current things that happen ( on here generally about the show)
This site is growing and that's good and more new people are posting as well as the usual members now for me i would not want to alienize people into not coming on cause someone has a bee in there bonnet about silly spelling mistakes

I don't think there's a difference between formal and informal grammar, there's just correct grammar and incorrect grammar. And while this board may be informal, full stops are a very nice and bloody useful thing to have in writing (as are commas, but I'm not going to hold my breath for them).

I have nothing against stringing word participles together, but it's not about things being formal, it's about things being readable. Grammar and spelling are the tools we use to communicate efficiently via a written medium, without them, a person may as well be writing in Klingon. Obviously a person can make mistakes, everyone does, but it would be nice if people would write as though they actually want other people to be able to read what they're writing. Whether this means running a spell check, checking for grammar, or just reading over what you've written to make sure it makes sense. There's not much point contributing to a forum if people can't understand what you're trying to say.

I don't tend to pick up on Aled's mistakes, because I assume that in his case it's not that he can't spell a word correctly. It's probably just that he's in such a hurry to get on with his busy showbiz lifestyle he doesn't have the time to make checks before posting.
it may not take you longer and belive me what i put down is a huge improvemnt. Than what i 1st typed but if you like I will let you see how bad my spelling and gammer can be.

I was on another forum once and the bullying about spelling was awful and un-necessary, until someone posted that it was not a spelling test and did not realise that we were under exam condition's.
Enough said, it shut them up.
I also do spelling and punctuation mistakes, mainly because I am trying to do 2 or 3 thing while I am typing.

Yes, I could read it, but I could only just read it. There are times when I can read some of your stuff pretty easily, but the are others where it can be very difficult. The above post is, unfortunately, an example of that.

I have noticed that you're spelling/grammar styles do change, although I hadn't really connected it with moods (as they are a little difficult to discern over the internet).
Is disprexea (dyspraxia?) the one that affects hand-eye coordination, and something to do with ADD as well?

Actually, there's a vast difference between understanding written and spoken language. We learnt to speak long, long before we learnt to write, it is a far larger part of our evolution. Also, with talking, you don't just have the words, you have the tone, inflection, speed, facial expressions, hand movement and other body language, and you don't need to know how to spell/read a word to be able to say/hear it.
Saying that though, if someone went into the pub and only spoke in pig-latin, then I think many people would find it hard to understand them.

No, but that is a good point, speech can be made difficult to understand by using foreign accents. I only really chose pig-latin because I thought saying Klingon would be a bit too much.

I would, and indeed have. I used to have a mate that constantly put on a really annoying Jamaican accent, and spoke using half-words and stupid slang. I had to tell him to stop doing it many times as no-one could understand what he was saying. We eventually stopped talking to him.

HELP. I am trying to give out some rep's but when i click on the scale's i can only see a fraction of the screen so cannot see what to do !! i have tried to drag it across but that will not work. Anyone else got this problem ?

If you right-click on the scales, and go to 'Open Link' (or words to that effect), then it'll take you to a page where you can give rep.
i am also getting that problem but i did right click on it after seeing that tho i thought it was just me:icon_surprised:

Ok, I've been messing around with the javascript and all menu's that were hidden before should now be visible. If there are any more problems, then please say so and I'll see what I can do about them.
I've just noticed that Chongster has joined me in the league of two rep pip gentlemen so congrats on that Chong! ;)
