As I'm sure many of you had realised, the site has been down for the past few days. It turns out that the hosting people were having a bit of a nightmare and our database server went down as a result. Well, it's finally backup and the site is ready for your posts again.

Welcome back!

Well, for those of you with surprisingly empty lives, I've put a system in place that should help if the database server goes down for an extended period again.

Same here although I'm pretty sure mine were worse, turned to drink and started shaking 24 7 couldnt sleep or anything!

That system sounds interesting Console, I would ask you to explain but to be perfectly honest it'd probably go over my head and won't really apply until the next time the database goes down and in which case might we not notice? (as in your solution will bypass the interruption?)

The system is essentially just an automatic daily mysql backup to an alternate SQL server, but it would require me to manually switch over the servers, it wouldn't be seamless.

To be fair, it'll take a while for people to get used to the new site with it's new features and name, I mean, it's only been a year. Actually, in an hour it'll be exactly a year.

Scratch that. While we did technically open the site at 12:30, it wasn't until 18:06 that users were redirected to this new site.

That was a fun time! I was struggling to get the home page animation working with buttons with just an hour to go! Memories!

Yeah, fun, right. I remember having to postpone the redirector three times because we didn't have everything ready (and will still didn't when we did eventually launch it).

As you can see, the site is back up from it's little bit of downtime. We're currently using the secondary SQL server, so things may be a little slow until we regain the ability to use the primary SQL server - hopefully, that won't be too long.

To help the current server along, I've temporarily disabled the 'Top Users' feature, as it is quite SQL intensive.

08-10-2008, 04:59 PM
I'm sure i can live without it

Console

For those of you that have had a different error the last few hours, it was due to the shoutbox, and the fact that it runs off a different configuration to the rest of the site (something which I should centralise) - all working fine now though.

bbb
08-10-2008, 08:41 PM
i had that problem only when i went to log in but once then i cleared the cokkies and all and was able just to read the new posts but not log on gald its fixed now

That would be because the shoutbox isn't active when you're not logged in. The problem won't happen again as I've centralised the SQL configuration. When the SQL server becomes available to us again it should be a seamless transition back to it.

Our primary SQL server has just become available to us again, and everything has been transferred over to it and we're now running from it. All is well.
