Below is a link to an article I've just been reading, which I thought made an interesting argument.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/oct/20/radio

For those who may be too lazy to click on the link and read the article in its entirety, it's entitled 'You can't see the join between Radio 1 and 2 - so scrap one', which should give you the jist of what it's about. Feel free to discuss the various sides of the argument if you can be arsed.

good article although for a min i thought it might be spam as it was your first post

as for the argument well i would be biased as i only listen to radio 1 so i could not axe that one at all i dunno what radio 2 is like to assume its worth axing then again isn't that why we have several stations so that people will always have choice so axing any would be silly

Me too, what a ridiculous article. Terry Wogan playing High Contrast to his Togs? I dont think so.

Punctuation, what a great invention.

I think that there's room for both stations. Ok Radio 2 do play some of the songs on Radio 1's play list but definatly not so much the other way round. I can't see Wogans Togs wanting to listen to Dizzy Rascal that much, but I can imagine them being ok with Katy Perry.

James to be honest don't bother lecturing me on punctuation as i couldn't really careless about it .

I think the argument that one radio station having 40% of listeners or 20/23 million listeners alone is enough to ensure that they should be seperate.

Or how about that half want one style another half wants the other otherwise surely everyone would listen to one now? Merge both and some of that audience will be unhappy.

Or they will all be unhappy.

There's too much stock put into demographics, such as what Mr. Kelner is doing by saying that just because a 50 year old listens to Radio One, they should merge with Radio Two or scrap one. They still deliver different content in their peak hours and do different things to appeal to their respective audiences, so there is therefore still room for both to co-exist with each other. You'd never hear a guy like Wogan on Radio One, nor would Popmaster himself, Ken Bruce fit in at this precise moment in time. Plus, One is making great strides in promoting the video and internet aspect of the station, something that I saw Chris Evans try to do recently, with unfortunate results. Plus, Radio One is far more of a vibrant music station, whereas shows such as Russell Brand, Jonathan Ross and others can get away with far more relaxed talking and a calmer atmosphere, as opposed to what can be quite erratic presenting with Scott Mills and Fearne and Reggie.

Maybe there's a distinction between Colin Murray and Mark Radcliffe, but you only have to look at Evans vs. Mills, Moyles vs. Wogan, Whiley vs. Bruce and the use of 1Xtra within Radio One programming to see that the line still exists. Just because 50 year olds are listening to both, doesn't mean they should rethink their entire strategy. I know 30 year olds who listen to jazz and hip hop, whilst my 40 year old mother listeners to Metallica and Marilyn Manson, and they're both of the exact same social economic background and current status.

Lousy argument, and I refer back to Bill Hicks as my signature attests: screw demographs, and start dealing with people instead. Radio One and Two may hit similar demographs, but they target different people and that's what makes them both as necessary as each other, seperately as well as combined.

I am certainly not within Radio 1's target demographic, and am snugly in the middle of Radio 2's. But if I had to listen to Wogan in the morning's I'd slit my wrists. On the whole the Radio 1 style suits me better, although there are some shows on 2 which I prefer to their Radio 1 counterparts - I like Chris Evans for instance. And Jonathan Ross is, in my opinion (other opinions are available), the best broadcaster on radio and TV in the UK. Now if Rossie took over from Wogan, I'd be conflicted.
