I'd love to hear a collection of the best handovers between early-breakfast and Chris, and then again with Chris and Whiley. There's been some absolute corkers, and it's practically a radio institution.

I dont think you can have a best of show really. The best bits of the show are normally the random little stories that come out of nothing.

I agree with Mitchell, some of the chats with JK and Joel, Greg James, Jo Whiley, Sara Cox etc. are highlights of mine. One recent example being when Greg and Neil changed the website to link to a Cliff Richard vid on youtube. I thought that was hillarious.

If you really need to put features in there, then it may not be what you want Aled, but its the ones that go wrong that are the best. Dave messing up tedious link for example.

I think every song you play during the show should be a parody aswell :P.

Well... the best bits of 2008 WILL be the smaller links. The best bits come from the Podcasts as they are already edited and Ant and I have a firm rule that we ONLY put the funniest stuff in the podcasts NOT the most impressive or political.

You're right though that between 04 - 08 it will be the bigger more political stuff as they were the days before the podcasts plus, there's an element to this show where I want to remind people just how good and just how big we are :) When we started in Jan 04 we forget just how refreshing the show was, breaking so many formats and having such a unique style. (For the UK M1TCH3LL - before you comment!)

Now that we've done it for 5 years we ARE the standard and people forget what we've achieved, instead they now focus on the bits they don't like. By doing this Birthday show you'll remember just how much we've done - a concept which otherwise won't happen until AFTER we've gone from the airways.

My plan is to have "Best of..." packages so "Best of The guests" or "Best of the parodies" etc so there's no reason why we couldn't have the "Best of... the handovers" - although if you think about it, we won't have archived the Jo Whiley links as they'd be in her show.

I like that idea, group them up, you definitely should put bits from new york/la in there...soooo funny! There's loads....i dont envy you Aled having to choose what goes in! :)

The inherant flaw in your plan, Aled, with all due respect, is that I fear you'll remind people of how good you WERE, as opposed to 'are'. Not to say you're bad, because i wouldn't be here if I thought you were. You definitely are the best show in this country, bar none. Hell, there are days where I prefer the Moyles show to my usual favourite of Stern. But the latter does weekly revisits to old shows called "Mastertape Theatre" and has released a spectacular 10-part "History of..." show that was absolutely incredible listening, but really showed how great they were and it was a little upsetting at times to realise that this was their peak and that they simply can't and don't match that quality these days. Whilst I can see that you'd only want your best stuff in this piece, and I'm sure you already know this, you want to make your current stuff look just as good instead of pointing out how great the things you used to do were. I'd hate, and I'm sure you would hate it too, to think that your peak is behind you. I wanna believe that you guys still have your best days ahead.

On the flipside, you'll definitely find out the answer to your "is the show better or worse" question from it.

Either way, I'll definitely listen. My only other suggestion is for segues from team members for insight into the show. The one thing I love about the Stern retrospectives is the interviews they do that shed insight on how certain things came to be, and stories never before told. So for instance, you could reveal how Car Park Catchphrase came to be, or ask Roy Walker to record a piece on how much the segment meant to his career. Just little things like that to make it seem more than just a best-of. But that would be what I'd do - I'm sure you have far bigger and better plans for it. I eagerly anticipate it :)

Hmm, Some of my favourite stuff that I can remember has been;
Patrick Keilty on the show before holiday [Nick-Nak-Paddy Wack ;)]
I liked the Zoe Ball interview from when she was on strictly come dancing, with the stories of her wedding :D
I've love the show everytime Billie Piper's on, great guest!
I'll try and think of some more.

You need to open the show with the original show start jingle about past breakfast show presenters, unless there's a specially comissioned one! :)

One of my favourite moments was when Chris did a Jeremy Kyle-like show to get Dave to announce his divorce - I wouldn't get out of the car 'cos I needed to hear all of it!!! Though I'm guessing that item probably won't make it to the 'best of'!!

Agreed, or maybe the same jingle but telling us whats happened over five years.

I heard the team talking about changing the cheesy song a couple of weeks ago too. I really hope that doesnt happen!

I think you should start the show with the entire first 10 minutes of the first show including the legendary opening song, and the first song (the one Kaiser Chiefs did a cover of on the 40th birthday album). :)

I love the Birthday show advert where Paul Turner calls Moyles "the King of global entertainment". I suppose that saying "the King of all Media" would have been TOO much of a rip-off ;)

Still, I'll listen to it. Between this and part two of "The History of Howard Stern" which is playing on Sirius, I'll have loads of great radio to listen to. I just hope that this 12 hour show isn't just a bunch of compilations. As I noted before, the one thing that makes THOHS so great is that all the clips are preceded by the team members explaining things, giving a little insight into what we may not have known at the time, and so forth. I'd love a similar thing with Moyles.

'Fraid not M1TCH3LL. It was considered but two reasons stopped us. One, the time we'd have to spend on those links over the 12 hours would make the recording workload ridiculously large and two, you'd lose a lot of best bit time the more you create new content.

I'm aware I'm going to disapoint a lot of people as everyone will have their best bits of the 5 years and we've been able to include only about 30% of the stuff i would have liked to - the longer the new links the less we'd be able to put in.

Aled
26-12-2008, 04:25 PM
We're doing a best of package across the day e.g. best of Car Park Catchphrase, or Best of Guests, Best of the parodies etc - the problem is the running orders I've got are from the start of the project back in November and we hadn't agreed where they'd all go. So I'm going to put them up as it now and then update them as I get my hands on the newer scripts.

Hey Aled, i am listening although only the first few hours so far.

So far I'm a little disappointed, as the whole title of a "Birthday" show, seems to have been left behind. Its very much a compilation of the past year. Theres been very little from previous years, except for the briefest clips on chris's birthday. It feels like a wasted opportunity to me.

And its especially bad since i listened to the Easter show a couple of days ago and recognise just about every link from it with just a few extra bits to say its new year instead of Good Friday.

Still enjoying it though despite this but i think you should have done seperate shows for the best of 2008 and the best of the five years.

Mitchell
01-01-2009, 05:06 PM
That's what I feared, sadly. I admit, I haven't heard anything until now (only woke up half hour ago) but thus far I've been listening for about 15 minutes and not even heard a single Moyles clip. All the podcasts thus far are downloading to my ITunes so that I can start from the beginning, but I was hoping for more of a retrospective rather than essentially a clip show, let alone a clip show that is apparently glossing over a good four years worth of good work.

I'll get back to you though, as it's only fair to judge as I go along rather than whilst narked at non-stop garbage music and a distinct lack of content thus far (again, 15 minutes).

Listening here too! I have to agree with others I'm afraid. As much as I'm aware of the amount of hard work and effort that's been put into the show, it's a shame some of the older stuff hasn't been put in. However, I've been an avid fan of the show for a few years now and I love the bits that have been picked out, as much as I would love to hear some more of the earlier breakfast stuff. Looking forward to hearing the show in January!

Dont misunderstand, i have enjoyed it. However given all the build up, not just from Aled on here but from Chris etc. on the last couple of weeks before christmas, i was expecting more than the best of 2008 with a few blink and you'll miss them packages that cover the 5 years. Sorry Aled, i know you have put alot of work into it, and i have enjoyed it, but its not what i was expecting given the build up.

I haven't heard any of it, but from what I've read of other peoples' comments it sounds like it was a case of false/misleading advertising. Which, given the current climate, you'd think would be something the BBC would be going out of their way to avoid.

I really don't want this to sound really bad, because (although I haven't heard all the show yet), what I heard was a very good reminder of 2008, and was enjoyable, and I'm aware a lot of work went into to it. I just wanted to comment in case a similar birthday show is done next year, to make it perhaps even better.

I was expecting (probably because I didn't listen carefully enough when it was being promoed in the live shows) a bit more than brief clips from the first 4 years. I only started listening in late 2007, and so was looking forward to entire links from before then, not fairly brief clips. All the stuff from 2008 I've listened to twice already (live and podcasted), so I didn't really need so much of it again. But entire links from all 5 years would have been a real treat for me (a relatively new listener) and I'm sure to those who have been listening since the beginning but have forgotten the older stuff (especially material from the first year and half that has never been podcasted (as far as I know). I was hoping for example for an equal spread of the best full links from all five years, interspersed with the best of packages as given in the show, to pad it out with more moments.

Perhaps that was wishful thinking, but maybe next year, the sixth birthday could go something like 2 hours from 2004, 2 from 2005, 2 from 2006, 2 from 2007, 2 from 2008 and the final 2 from what I'm sure will be a fantastic 2009. That would be a real treat for old time fans as a reminder of some proper gold, and for newer listeners, where (depending on when they first started listening) some of it will be brand new material. Maybe some of this old school stuff could be dug out for when the team is on holiday as well in the coming year ....

Just a thought or two.

Once again, really enjoyed the show as a review of 2008, thank you for the work you put into it (I have many new podcasts to entertain me on my long drive back up to uni on Sat), but please, if you do it again, could the amount of full links presented be split evenly between all the years of the show ... the older stuff, the better!

Hope this wan't too disppointing Aled, keep up the good work for 2009!

Blimey, what a bunch of whining geeks you all sound - I expect that kind of thing from Jonno, but the rest of you, well, its out of character!

What I loved about the whole thing was knowing that any time I was in the kitchen for a few minutes, or longer, or in the car, or doing anyything at all away from other people's telly noise, I could switch it on and know something good was on offer - ALL DAY!

Of course I didn't hear it all, but surely it wasn't designed to be listened to as a whole? Who the hell has the kind of life that can accommodate listening to and analysing an all-day radio show?!

LOL! Ant and I put the 12 hours together so knew we played No hair later - we therefore kept it out of the best of package.

Thanks everyone for the brilliant feedback and thoughts. I actually stand by what we did. Everyone was looking for something out of the day whereas my job was to compromise between everyone's expectations. For example one management person at Radio 1 was more keen on 08 only due to workload - so from that context - I'm really pleased with hearing what we did pre 08 - brought back loads of memories. Even if there weren't as many as some would have liked!

It still took Ant and I two months to make the show in addition to our jobs the extra workload required for the level of memory lane content needed is probably more work than is worth it but I'll look into it for 2010! (because it sounds like we'd need to start soon!!)

It still took Ant and I two months to make the show in addition to our jobs the extra workload required for the level of memory lane content needed is probably more work than is worth it but I'll look into it for 2010! (because it sounds like we'd need to start soon!!)

I know you and Ant put alot of work in, and dont for one second think i'm not grateful because i am. And as a 2008 recap it worked wonderfully. But as a Birthday show, i found it lacked in its execution.

But as i said, i still loved it, once i realised what it was lol.

I thought it was a tour de force Aled, and you should be proud.

Nah, 6 years doesn't really have the same ring as a 5th birthday. If we're still there for the 10th...

There is a fair chance - I dont think it sounds dated, it has a cycle of reinvention - 10 years here you come!

well done for the hard work put into it anyway

when something is so good trying to pick the best bits would have to be a nightmare to do
