although you did start the what you are doing today thread and it became popular
And I didn't already know this? :eusa_doh::081:
I had a feeling someone would mention this, hence not including it in my original.
The 'what you are doing ...' thread was an idea first seen and taken from the show blog, so it does have a certain element of relevance.
It was created as a way of taking people away from the other key threads, but it too joined the steadly growing ranks of popular 'non-thinking' threads.

well OK then what kind of topics would you like to see on here then maybe other people including myself may come up with similar topics to start off
agreed i am getting bored with the same threads popping up i do try to avoid them but boredom kicks in and its fatal
i cant really join in on the gaming threads or geeky ones as i don't have much interest at all in them
books i don't read but it would be good for other peeps on here so maybe a good idea for a thread could be eg: book corner
bbb likes poems he could make a thread about them and if others like them they might join in
anyway i know i have lacked in making new threads in the past i will try harder to think of new topics that will be of interest to others on here
I will start a plethora of new threads to get people debating and thinking then! I will just think of a few first.

A plethora is not a good way. Quality rather than quantity.
Adam, you could start something decent if you are so bothered. You seem to be the only person bothered about it so solve your own problem by starting something worthy of discussion!

I am less concerned with an abundance (well, Adam's perception seems to be of an abundance) of "dull" threads than I am about the proliferation of spam-type responses to posts - by which I mean the one or two word type replies, typically something like "agreed!" or "He he" or god forbid simply "lol!".
An internet forum isn't the same as a chatroom or a face to face conversation, we need to maybe remember that what goes on these boards is read by everyone (well, it wouldn't hurt to assume that) so a bit of effort should be expended to make what you write worth reading.

I was considering starting a Family Fortunes game thread, as i got the board game for christmas. But if its gonna be met by the boring police with their heads up their own arses then i wont bother.

The reduction of game-threads was actually a policy that Aled put in place, and it's one I completely agree with. Game-threads lead to a lot of posts with very little content, the Word-Association Game was a brilliant example of this. While not as bad as that, your Family-Fortunes thread does have quite a low word-count -to- post ratio.
Now, game-threads aren't inherently bad - when there's a lot of heavy topics on the go, a game-thread can be a nice alternative (for some) - they shouldn't be (and aren't) banned outright (with the obvious exception being another Word-Association Game - instant-banning!), but we have to be careful to keep the balance right. At the moment, it's the only active game-thread (as far as I can see) and there's quite a few other threads on the go, so there's no reason not to do it.
As Yudster pointed out, game-threads aren't the only places where posts without much content get posted. There plenty of posts that contain just one or two words, or even just a smilie, and while I sure you really did laugh so hard that your arse fell off (sometimes more than once per person, which is worrying), is it always necessary to point it out? If you do want to point it out, please do so, but also try to add something to the thread; if you're laughing at a joke, tell another one; if you're arse just fell off then ask if anyone knows a good plastic surgeon.

I really don't understand the problem with this. I don't want to come on a forum to be greeted with 10000 word essays. If you want to read something insightful and upmarket i suggest you get off your high horse and visit a library.

Im sorry but you talk nonsense. In real life people don't discuss things in 10000 word speeches. And If i tell a joke i want to know people have laughed at it, not have them keep quiet because people like you are gonna come down on them like a ton of bricks if they dont have a joke to reply with.
I'm sure in the Radio 1 forum Aled would rather hear everyone's opinions on the show. Not just those people with too much time on their hands (like me) who can post long and detailed posts or the ones with English A Levels (unlike me) who can put their points across in a well structured and grammatically correct way
Until recently i completely avoided the general discussion forum, because of the completely dull and longwinded threads that were in there debating world peace. And i've been a member since the old website, so i can only imagine how daunting it is for new people to post here.
I've seen alot of fun and lively forums, ruined by over moderation and the people running the website getting above their station and thinking its something other than a public forum, which it is. I hope the same doesn't happen here.
Also can i say that, its not the size that matters, its what you do with it.
I disagree with every single point you've made, but I won't bother writing a 10000 word essay explaining why this is the case, because you wouldn't read it.
I would just like to make two points. The first one being that I don't have an A-Level in English, but I can still (I hope) put my points across in a well structured and grammatically correct way. I am sure that many other people who don't have said A-Level can do so too. English is our first language, so I think it's up to us to ensure we can and do use it properly, both in terms of speaking it and using the written word. It's not as though people are being asked to make perfect posts in Polish or Chinese.

The above line puzzles me. Reading back through the titles of the threads on the last few pages of the General Forum I can't see where anyone has come close to debating world peace?
I can see threads such as 'The Twelve Days of Christmas', 'Unusual Phobias', 'Marry, Shag, or Throw off a Cliff' and 'Cats on Cars', and many others along similar lines, none of which are the kind of topics you'd need to be a member of MENSA to post about.

I suppose that we're both fortunate that there are numbers between two and ten-thousand then, eh?
In real life people don't discuss things in 10000 word speeches.
In real life people don't say 'lol' and 'rofl' either (I hope). In real life people aren't confined to talking sequentially - you can interrupt and talk over people - there are many differences between speaking and writing, what's your point?
And If i tell a joke i want to know people have laughed at it, not have them keep quiet because people like you are gonna come down on them like a ton of bricks if they dont have a joke to reply with.
Whose been come down upon?
Again, this represents a difference between conversing in 'the real world' and conversing via a forum. In 'the real world' you can see and hear peoples reactions straight away, on a forum a hundred different people may read your joke over a couple of days - do you really expect them all to respond to your message telling you that you were funny? If they all don't how would you know that they all got the joke and thought it was funny?
Until recently i completely avoided the general discussion forum, because of the completely dull and longwinded threads that were in there debating world peace.
If you completely avoided it, how would you have known what was in there? Saying that though, you obviously didn't know what was in there.
And i've been a member since the old website, so i can only imagine how daunting it is for new people to post here.
Daunting to post? Which active (or even inactive) topics would be daunting to post in?

Yep - its the same as when blokes say "Yes love, that dress looks great" (which means "I haven't looked, and I wouldn't know even if I did - can we go now?!") or "More than a handful is a waste" (meaning "you should get implants"), or "Its personality that counts", meaning "I like blonde, blue eyed big-boobed personalities").

Hi there i think that the site is great, i hope i don't offend any one because i don't mean to.
But i think that the graphical side of the website is lacking very much, i feel that its dated per 1995.
The usability is very good. and this matters more than anything.

If you can let me know a little about the site or even give me a copy of the script ill work on some designs. I don't want to change the functionality or usability that is already here. but yea ill love to give it a shot.
Small little thing - I'm starting to miss the Rankings we used to have of users depending on the number of posts - 'senior member' seems a bit boring now - Could the 'Tea boy' Assistant producer etc ranks be put back on? - or even a different variant like the different dj's used on UM (If they still do that?)

Arron,
I think its really great that you're obviously putting a lot of effort into this but the site only had a re-design a little while back (... well, relatively for me), and I mean quite an overhaul - background and presentation, all of which took quite a while to do for Chong and Console and all others involved! - See that thing on the left? - theres some clever stuff behind that by Console, and the avatars of Aled in the top right and the general look of the place (inc intro flash)? - same with those for Chongster. I don't mean to be very rude and just put you down but at the same time I think it needs to be made aware that the site has had a lot of effort put into it already and any changes that should be made should only be smaller ones in my opinion. That said, it is a forum so its not up to one person to decide (Unless its Aled, in which case we should all agree ;))
Is there a way to change the forum skin, like on the old forum?
Arron Davies

Well the design is to be considered as mentioned by console a few weeks ago. I'm not expecting much to happen but hay its fun for me to do.
I Quote
"If you (or anyone else) can come up with an new/improved design then I'd be glad to implement it so that it can be tried out"
I've considered what Aled said in his recent blog and took them aboard to. physicaly nothing has been drasticly changed in my fun effort just a visual boost and the twitter feed added. as on request. All the work the the guys have made are still in the new design, even the intro!
I figured I was treading on egg shells

Technically, yes, but it's been disabled as the only other skins installed are the Halloween and Christmas ones and the site's been set-up to allow us to override the skin of the forum at the same time as the rest of the site.
It would be possible to change that though, so if we get multiple designs for the site users will be able to switch between them at will (that does require actually having other designs/skins though).

uvavo uvavo crash the west wing
I'm largely open to any ideas. I seem to just be working to a few things.
It needs to be less stale. I RARELY stray further than the blog and forum. So the other areas can be wound up I think. I NEVER see anyone in the chat at the top - i'm thinking that could be the twitter feed made up of forum members?
Its incredible how much flak i come under if I get the balance wrong between forum I love to talk to others about Radio 1 and stuff and an ego trip for me so whereas putting podcasts or Surgeries on here would be fun I'd get crucified as getting lost up my own bum.
Happy for skins - I'm not into being too much of a control freak :)
And one other really really bad news which I apologise for in advance. The BBC rules are tightening up considerably. I can't get the support for the back end of .info like I used to so I'm going to have to pay for it all. Despite the appearance of not much changing on the site we actually get a lot of traffic so I have to pay high fees for large bandwidth which (regrettably) means the Google Ads will prob have to come back.
just realised how much the above was a random dump of thoughts. Sorry it didn't make much sense!
Mitchell

The Google Ads aren't an issue if you put them in the right places. I don't think anyone will begrudge you for trying to cover your costs. So, personally, I say go for it. If it keeps the site up, it's a small price to pay for the greater good.
