What would you like to see improved on the site?

might just be me... but please could you 'improve' the shoutbox so it doesn't jump to the first shout?!
other than that, thumbs up - all is good!!

Mine did it for a while. Stop for a bit, and it's started again. Very confusing.

Firefox by the way.

I'm finding it really slow - not sure whether thats because I've got a crap connection or not, but finding it quite frustrating...

Q

I'm also finding it very slow, some of the pages are not being displaying properly at times - things all over the place. After a few minutes they seem to sort themselves out though. Pictures (especially the 'top users') are taking a long time to display too.

:)

its taking a bit to get used too but i like to find out things as i go along and it is a tad slow but maybe thats because its just started up again and everyone is posting so in time it should get back to normal

Super revamp :-)

I thin the hosts might have been spinning you a line about being able to host the site through mention spikes. It's seems to be struggling with a fairly normal amount of visitors ... although it surprises me as it seems to be on a dedicated server.

I am finding the forum a bit narrow, seems a bit cramped with a chunk of space on the right with nothing in it (apart from the cool aled behind a lecturn pic). So would prefer the forum a bit wider maybe taking out the space on the right, but its only a minor thing :) and guess it might look a bit wonky.

Q

I'm now finding that if im writing a post and taking my time with it (spell checker, checking facts etc) that when I go to post it, I am sent to the log in page, as though I have been timed out. I then have to do the entire post again, only more quickly! Can this be changed somehow?

Copy & Paste what you have typed so that when you log back in, you can just paste it, instead of re-typing. But hey, improves keyboard skills for typing quicker eh?

What could be improved? Everything.

I appreciate the hard work that's gone into the site and this is Aled's site which means it should be to his tastes. But personally, I dislike it. I hate the narrowness of the forums (I admire the upgrade to vBulletin but it should be far wider for fullest potential aesthetically). i dislike the "users browing" side section which is bigger than the site itself. If it's needed, remove the images or apply it using AJAX so we can expand or collapse it as we wish. The "Avatar Maker" image on the menu just looks daft. And remove this: http://www.aled.info/images/homebanner.png - it isn't necessary at all. Just looks like clutter.

In fact, that's the site itself. Just looks too clumped together. Space things out, allow everything to breathe, and rid of that lengthy white space on the right of the Flash. No point it overlapping the Aled.info logo when there's so much space that should be used up just a few centimetres away.

Otherwise, good work

To save multiple posts saying the same thing let me list the points Console and I had already noticed even before launch that we're going to amend in time:

The narrowness. It was the result of a layout idea I wanted early on. It doesn't quite look like what was intended. Unfortunately to have the site relfect the size of the screen you're using is going to take some major reworking behind the scenes. As the site has taken so long to create we decided on going with it for launch and working on it afterwards.

The photos page Sean our flash wizard was unable to get this up for launch, the pics will be worked on and relaunched very soon

Top Users There are too many, it's sucking bandwidth and slowing the site down - we know this, and knew this would be the case. I wanted to keep it large at start while the site is relatively empty so that all the regulars from the old site can see it, understand it and get their face on it. In a few days we will be limiting the number of faces on there. It'll be a Top users based on reputation. Once that happens it's going to be harder to get your face on there, but it'll speed things up!

Console

I hate the narrowness of the forums (I admire the upgrade to vBulletin but it should be far wider for fullest potential aesthetically).

Like Aled said, we've already discovered this, and it's due to two problems that are going to be hard to fix. The first is that when Nood designed the site template he did it all in px, which is great if you want to get an exact look, but it, obviously, doesn't work very well on different sized screens (any width other than 1024 looks weird).

The other problem is vBulletin, whose template system has pretty much every measurement in px as well, which also restricts what we can do until we replace and test every measurement.

I will be redoing the template over the next few weeks, so the annoyance shouldn't be there for long, but unfortunately it wasn't a priority for launch.

If it's needed, remove the images or apply it using AJAX so we can expand or collapse it as we wish.

The 'Top Users' is already AJAX, although some basic javascript could be used to reduce the size of it, shrinking it down to just names and online status.

The "Avatar Maker" image on the menu just looks daft.

Hey, if you can come up with a better image to fit in the gap, be my guest.

rid of that lengthy white space on the right of the Flash

That white space is actually there for something, although it hasn't quite panned out yet (not under our control unfortunately).

This is now done, although I may ask Chongster to do a smaller image to replace the solid background colour. Just click on the icon next to 'Top Users' to expand and collapse the list from full details, to just the names. It also sets a cookie, so it should remember your choice all over the site.

Console, I love you in a 'geekily I respect all the work that you have done and think you've done a great job' way :)

As for you, M1TCH3LL, I think you are being very unreasonable, the site launched yesterday and on the whole it is a great site!, any niggles that you may have just get over.

Agreed on the narrowness although as Aled said it was already known, cant wait for the new photo's page :)

As for you, M1TCH3LL, I think you are being very unreasonable, the site launched yesterday and on the whole it is a great site!, any niggles that you may have just get over.
Then there shouldn't be a "what could be improved" thread, should there? What's the point of feedback if it is going to be dismissed as "unreasonable" and "never going to please you"? If people can't handle one persons opinion, there is a big X in the top right hand corner of your browser. Believe me, I'm not here for the layout of the site. I'm here because I like the Chris Moyles Show, Aled himself, and the people who I spoke to here on the last site. But when there's a feedback thread, guess what I'm gonna give....

*buzz*

"Is it feedback, boss?"

Correct for 10.

The 'Top Users' is already AJAX, although some basic javascript could be used to reduce the size of it, shrinking it down to just names and online status.
I noticed this was implemented. Looks better already. Appreciated.

I also appreciate that the site is new and there'll always be little niggles to work out. Sucks that certain features haven't worked out as planned but it happens, sadly. Don't think I don't admire the work that's gone into the site. I know from experience - web design and programming is hard freakin' work.

As much as I love feedback, something tells me if the answer you get when asked what should be improved is "everything" that just possibly we're not going to be able to ever please you!
Don't worry about pleasing me. I was on the last site when it looked like a 5 minute job on Geocities, and I'll be on it when it turns into a simple picture of your face linking to the forum :icon_razz2:. No, no I like feedback. Yours has already helped improve the site in time for any MySpace buddies, Facebook friends or radio listeners coming over so it's helped already.

How about two way feedback? Maybe you could be a little less agressive with how you give it. Don't want to go getting other member's backs up eh!?

I've actually been wanting to talk to you about that, would you be able to come on MSN later?

How come I can only get to the non-flash gallery when I have Javscript turned off!??

It's because we're using javascript to detect whether Flash is installed (and of the required version), and if javascript is turned off it defaultly falls back on the non-Flash version.

I really don't want to install that thing again. It bothers me when I don't even use it! Silly MSN. The template can be full width just by changing the CSS. Or would you just want it wider?

Flash CS3 embeds using a function like swfobject, but still always puts the object inside noscript (example (http://www.shlomp.com/portfolio/?t=interactive&c=vanillagirls&p=vanilla_cluedyke)) so it's not reliant on Javascript. That aside I would prefer to get the link to the non Flash version anyway, even if I do have JS on. The Flash one's nice - but I prefer HTML.

This thread will become pretty inaccessible to the average user browsing for suggestions on how things could be improved if we get into such technical detail between 2 coding experts as yourself! Shame you won't go on MSN Nood, if not any chance of e-mail of PMs?

I would prefer at this stage that it's just a flash option for now with photos. As I haven't even looked at the non-flash page so don't know what pics or layout you're looking at. As soon as we've worked on one we'll publicise it.

Often I go to click on something or type but it just won't stay there long enough, or is overlapping with something else. :(

At the moment I'm at 1024x768, but it happens in lower and higher res, too.

Yes, it's the reputation, formatting dropdowns, stuff like that. And the text box is very narrow while the smileys panel is very wide when posting a new thread... I think I attached a screen of that a while ago.

Fair enough if it was requested. I'm guessing you've got Quick Reply set on Standard Controls or such (I can't be bothered to login to my vB to look). Just thinking if there's a way to add the little smilie box that's on the Post Reply page, just to spruce it up a little. Not that you need to change it, lol. Just thinking out loud.

Simple:

I believe the reason you may have found this harder is because the forum hosts signature images through a fancy thingymabob :)

I've just said this in another thread, but is there the faintest chance that the forums can stop turning into the CM.net boards? Call me "old school", but it was nice to be able to click on a thread that looked interesting and see posts related to the topic, rather than:

OP: Do you like cheese?
1: Yes, very.
2: No, not at all.
3: Great, another OP topic. What kind of cheese? Food? Or your feet?
OP: Oh shut up. I'm great, me.

4: I sucked last night. Isn't sucking great.
3: What about that weather?

Possible? Yes. Going to happen? No.

Having voice chat would require a live-streaming server, which we don't have, and a complicated applet to capture, send, receive and play sound, which we don't have. As for voice recognition, no, it's client-side, not server side - it's down to you to install a voice2text program.

I've got a list of things that I'm working through for this site, so I'll add it and try to find a way to get it working.

I know several people who use cm.net and other forums on their phones - how is this forum different?

It's largely due to vB's template system (and how much of a pain it is to edit templates), but there are some conflicts between vB's template system and the site's template system. I originally solved that conflict with a quick hack, but for phones (and other mobile devices) the template system will need an overhaul so as to not choke the rendering engine.

Essentially, the site wasn't originally developed/desgined to be used on mobile devices (despite suggestions to the contrary) and it now means a rewrite to get it working well on them.

I have noticed over the last week or so that this site is becoming increasingly slow to load and clunky to use - each page is taking much longer to load than it used to, to the extent that I'm mostly giving up before anything can actually be looked at. I thought initially it must be my computer, but this is the only site which is affected as far as I can tell - any explanation Console?

Well, we've had a few difficulties with our primary SQL server, which may have caused a little bit of a lag, but it's probably some of the anti-spam measures that took effect recently. These measures have now been relaxed, so hopefully things will run faster once we get out primary SQL server back up.

It seems a lot better today actually - thanks Console.

Possible, yes, but sound on a webpage is a real PITA. We tried it with the chatroom, but it got very annoying, very quickly.

I will look into it though and see if I can come up with something that won't be annoying.

I could flash although would not be worth developing - people would switch me off (was going to say turn me off!)

All fixed - I didn't take into account the fact that I had updated the HTML, a while ago, to change the name of the chatroom menu image (so lots of people didn't have to flush their cache).

Forgive me - this is quickly off the top of my head.

Certain threads could do with being rested. If you have a contentious thread whereby you're adding daily to the same thread, effort to these threads is minimal.

] There is no variety, it discourages others from joining as there isnt much to read or contribute too. The place will slowly become dull and its existing members will sort other portals to join.I personally feel that certain areas of this forum are flat and there is no appeal.

We should all be making an effort to create new threads, keeping the place fresh and ensuring we offer interesting / fun threads to potential new members and its existing ones who don't post very often.

The most popular threads are ones which are easy to post to, require no actual thinking other than stating why you're sad or happy, or what you're doing.

:)
