View Full Version : So, what's it like working with Chris Moyles?

Reposted, because i a) like the article b) its worthy of a new mention on the new forum!

Not many people from the forums would of seen this, but Aled recently appeared in an article in Ariel, which is the BBC's in-house weekly newspaper. Thought I'd write the article up as its a nice read

Is mouth Radio 1 Presenter Chris Moyles really the homophobic monster he's been branded by the tabloids? There's one man who can say for sure, his producer Aled Haydn Jones, who is openly gay and has worked with Chris for six years. He says he's not.

'It bothers me that people think that he's homophobic,' he says wearily. 'I work so hard to make sure that the show is good. Why would I bother if he was?'

Although Aled is often the target of the Moyles show jokes, he's sure it's not because of his sexuality. The show is devised as a soap opera in which every member of the crew has an exaggerated character, and everybody takes the mikey out of everybody else: Chris for being overweight, Dave Vitty (aka Comedy Dave) for being grumpy, fellow producer Rachel Jones for her west country accent. His role is to be the Welsh one, the dippy one - and, yes, the camp one. 'I have straight friends who are camp and gay friends who aren't. It's not part of my sexuality.

In fact he'd be more upset if he was left out because of his sexuality, and believes that the last thing thing programme makers should do is treat the gay community as if there was a taboo in force. "It's the opposite we need.

Almost every gay man is looking for normality and acceptance - it's not a 'special' thing.'

He admits that at first he was nervous about admitting to being gay on air - having grown up in a small town he know that not all community attitudes to homomsexuality are as relaxed as they are in cities like London and Manchester. 'Chris just couldn't understand it,' he recalls. 'He would say to me: 'But this is part of you - why not?'

Of the 5000 texts the show gets every day a tiny percentage can be homophobic. Aled dismisses them as 'ignorant' but says it's Chris who leaps to his defence when things get unpleasant. 'Chris will be a mate and say on-air 'we don't want this kind of thing'.'

It's been suggested that if you're a teenager who's coming to terms with your sexuality, Radio 1 in the mornings is not the most reassuring place to be. This, says Aled, is rubbish. While he is nervous about the idea of being a role model ('I'm flawed, just like everyone else'), he insists that being an openly gay producer on a show with 8m listeners, and being integrated with the team, is a positive example of how sexuality need not be barrier to career progression. He wishes he'd seen more gay success stories when he was growing up. 'Julian Clary was the only gay in the media,' he remembers.

I'd be concerned to see on here if someone said they thought he was. As i've said before I think its great that the BBC are allowing this kind of discussion. Although they appear to be working hard to change people's views on Mr Moyles, I believe the damage done in previous broadcasts, will take a while to repair. Alot of people like him and this is obvious by the figures actively being published.

It appears that its a small, narrow minded people, who maybe aren't aware of the 'openess' of one of its team members. I believe we'll see more of articles featuring Aled, Chris or the team in the future.

Interesting article Adam , it seams to me that no matter what Chris does to show he does not discriminate anyone sexuality and openly jokes about it on air but some people are so thick and narrow minded that they cant see past this and call him homophobic which is ridiculous
you can tell the great friendship he has with aled and respects him alot just by listening to his show

Absolutely. However I was speaking to someone in my family recently and they were like, "That aled, he gets the piss taken out of him so much"

This is a person well out of the target of the show, although its often good to go above your remit age bracket (hey, who said one more listener hurt?) This is a person who is not a loyal listener, this isn't a person who's spent a great deal of time listening to the show and the team, this isn't a person who posts on fan sites about nearly every aspect of the show.

Does it not occur to you the people who are maybe saying these things about Chris Moyles, are ill educated and not loyal to the radio show?

Gay groups, woman's groups or similar ethic group will always see Chris Moyles as a target and a bit of scapegoat when its comes to something he says.

It's often taken out of context (I cant believe im even saying this) and people just really get on my nerves. People dont know what makes the show run, people aren't aware that there's a bloody gay guy working in close proximity of the Presenter.

I totally agree with you Adam.People jump on the bandwagon, hear other people saying he (wrongly) is so homophobic and then use that as their own argument. These people can never back up their argument, or refer to the gay ring tone incident. The people who listen to Moyles are not the sort of people to be offended by anyhting like that; he says things much more offensive daily about girls and babies!

These people who complain about something they know jack shit about need to get over themselves, and stop trying to make arguements that dont exist. It definately does nothing to encourage me to get involved in 'the gay world'!

I must say i agree with Adam to! Everyone's jumping on the band wagon, loads of people say he's a homophob, racist, the lost. I've told them to listen to the show or let me send them said incident but they wont take it. Unbelievable. But i know many people that heard said interviews and don't think hes racist. It's all about people getting the show really. Lots of people i know didn't hear said events, but get the show and understand what Chris Is about. It's silly.

The thing is, if everything he said was politically correct, it would stop being funny.

I'm not the straightest girl in the world and I laugh with my friends at the lesbian jokes. It makes life more fun. People need to relax and stop taking things so seriously. I love how even gay people get called homophobic sometimes when they make a joke or a remark. Then people find out they're actually gay and feel a bit stupid.

Chris pokes fun at not liking animals and saying how he'd eat dogs & kittens and you don't see the Animal Rights people in his face. Why? Because they get it. Adam, I agree wholeheartedly. People are either going to like him or not -- and, if not, use his bashing of Aled as "the gay Welsh one" as the rope to hang him with. Where are all the ladies up in arms in Kidderminster for having their accents made fun of? Why haven't the Grumpy People of the world united & caused a furor? What about Bald Men Anonymous with Heads Shaped Like Eggs? Or Faux Posh Accented Women Sports Readers? And, lastly, Chris IS overweight and pokes fun at HIMSELF about it. Like the article said -- everyone gets laughed at for something. Some people just don't get it...
Thanks for providing it, Adam. Was a good read.
